The Teleprompter Dilemma- To Use One or Not; Gerry Oginski, Founder of Lawyers Video Studio Explains


Many video companies have their clients read content from a teleprompter. It gives the viewer the impression that the lawyer is speaking into the camera and directly at the viewer. But here’s the problem.

Most attorneys, entrepreneurs and professionals who use a teleprompter have never used one. If they have, they likely don’t have much face-time with it. It’s not as simple as reading something from a page out loud. It scrolls as you talk. It speeds up as you talk faster and slows down when you slow down. A professional teleprompter is operated by a guy sitting at a laptop with your content plugged in. He responds to the way you present your content.

If you’re using a teleprompter on your own, or using an iPad rig, you cannot easily control its speed while you are talking. Instead, you must continually adjust it faster or slower every time you stop and take a break.

More importantly, why would you ever need to read your content when talking to a potential client?

Don’t you know your content?

When a new client comes into your office and asks you a question, do you put your hand up to stop them and tell them “Hold on. I have to run to my file cabinet to get my script in order to answer your legal question.”

Of course you don’t.


I don’t know this lawyer. I’m sure he’s a good guy and knows his immigration law.

But ask yourself if the presentation made by this attorney is compelling. Is it enticing? If you are a viewer searching for answers to an immigration problem, will this video inspire you to pick up the phone and call?

He’s clearly reading his content. He’s stiff and very formal.

That’s not the way you interact with clients in your office. I’m sure he’s more comfortable and informal talking to new clients in person.

Usually, when reading from a teleprompter, you don’t want to be so close to the camera.

Why not?

You don’t want your viewer to see your eyes moving from left to right as you speak your content. It becomes obvious that you’re reading from the teleprompter.

Even experienced actors and on-screen TV personalities require years of teleprompter work in order to make it seem natural and conversational. Just look at the news anchors or late night TV hosts like Jon Stewart of the Daily Show.

Reading from a teleprompter is challenging and can hurt your ability to connect with your viewer.

Take a look at this one and decide whether this message is compelling and would eagerly make you want to pick up the phone and call.

By the way,You should immediately notice that there are no graphics on the video tell the viewer who is speaking. Nor is there any contact information. That’s a big problem.

I found Gerry’s approach to be a common sense approach to… what people are looking for. It’s not necessarily what we think our video should be, it’s really what people are searching for. Gerry’s made a study of how people search the web and what they need from lawyers and then he’s able to communicate that on video. That’s what I really found intriguing: the methodology by which we shoot the videos and the way that he communicates that methodology.
