I had an “Aha” moment about two years ago. I was creating a series of videos for my legal practice to help viewers understand how lawsuits work in New York. A friend of mine asked me whether I was a marketer, and up until that time, the answer was “No.”
“I’m a medical malpractice and personal injury trial lawyer,” I said. “I’m not a marketer.” A marketer is sleazy. A marketer is a businessman looking to make a sale. A marketer is someone who wants you to part with your hard earned money. At least that’s what I thought up until that point. Then I realized that what I was trying to do was educate a viewer with my videos. It was at that moment that I recognized for the very first time that what I was doing was in fact MARKETING!

Today’s video review is not about a lawyer video. Rather, it’s about a guy who built a business creating newsletters for people to keep in touch with their customers and clients. Jim Palmer calls himself the “Newsletter Guru.” He clearly “gets” why it’s so crucial to keep in touch with your clients and customers on a regular frequent basis.
In this video we see Jim paddling his canoe on a lake near his home. He is wearing sunglasses, and the camera is sitting in the canoe pointed upwards. As Jim talks, you hear the oar making contact with the water. Jim tells a story about finding a painting he wanted to purchase and the business owner refusing to ship it to his home. The point of the video is to show that the business owner lost a key opportunity to make an easy sell by creating a roadblock.

When bike riding and approaching a large hill, the most common way to approach it is to attack the hill on your bike. There is no easy way to bike up a hill. Instead of letting inertia and laziness take over, you must make that Herculean effort to overcome gravity and propel yourself up the hill in an aggressive and confident manner. When you’ve reached the top you glance down at the hill that you just conquered. Even though you may be exhausted from your climb up the mountain, looking back to the bottom of the hill is filled with a great sense of accomplishment. When faced with doing something easy, or doing something hard, you will usually be better off attacking the challenge that is more difficult, rather than taking the easy and lazy way out.
There is a road in Great Neck which forks left and right. The path to the left affords me a straight and level road. The path to the right offers a quick downhill but then an intense and short uphill section of road. Either choice of road gets me to the same exact place. When you arrive at the fork in the road ask yourself “Do I take the easy road, or the more challenging one?”

Lawyers: Why Bother Creating Attorney Video?
Does your yellow pages ad allow you to interact with your reader?
Does your classified ad give your reader a ton of information about how you can help solve their problem?
Does your radio ad allow a viewer to get to see you and begin to trust you?
Does your 30 second TV ad give a viewer the opportunity to see how you are an expert in your field of law?
Do any of your marketing methods allow a viewer the opportunity to form a bond with you and begin to trust you before they ever walk into your office?

An attorney called me to review a medical malpractice case, which I quickly rejected. He then asked if I would refer any people who had a problem within his specialized expertise in a little-known field of law.
I asked this attorney to write a blog post, about 350-400 words long, so I could post it on one of my blogs. The purpose? So my readers could learn from his expertise and know that he’s a good source of information for this particular problem. Instead of taking me up on my offer to write a guest post, he said “Why don’t we exchange website links…if that’s actually permissible.”

Who is my ideal attorney client?
Simple. An attorney who:
* Understands the benefit of creating video to market themselves online,
* Recognizes that video allows you to create a message that is not truncated by the size of your ad,
* Realizes that they have so much useful content to tell the world,
* Has the right mindset to market their legal practice,
* Wants to get onto video now,
* Wants a turn-key system, where all he has to do is show up for the video-shoot and start talking,
* Already has a website or a blog,
* Is eager to learn how video can improve the likelihood of an online viewer calling him instead of his competitor,
* Has read my articles in the Lawyers’ Video Studio,
* Has seen my New York medical malpractice video blog as just one example of how I use video to market myself online.

You’ve got to start somewhere. You notice your website is not doing that great. Your pay-per-click campaign is costing a lot of money. The calls you were promised are not materializing. The attorney directory you signed up for is worthless. Your TV ad campaign is generating a lot of junk and an occasional case. Referrals are still good, but not consistent.
You’re stuck in a rut and don’t know what else to do to make potential clients call you instead of your biggest competitor. If this sounds like you, then I strongly urge you get onto video today.
Video will change your life.

1. You can educate your viewer
2. Your viewer gets to hear you before ever meeting you
3. Your viewer gets to see you before ever meeting you
4. Your viewer gets to hear your expertise before ever meeting you
5. A viewer is able to make an educated decision about whether you are the right lawyer for them, before they ever meet you
You can’t do that with a yellow pages ad.
You can’t do that with a classified or display ad in a newspaper.
You can’t do that with a static website.
Nor can you do that with photos on your website.
When a potential client comes into your office, isn’t your goal to educate them about how a lawsuit like theirs works, and how you can best guide them through their lawsuit?
Didn’t you ever wish you could simply answer a viewer’s question online but had no real way to do so except for replying in an email?
When you are buying a big-ticket appliance or a large flat-screen TV, don’t you want to read the reviews of what people who have purchased the item said about it…all before you spend your hard-earned money? Of course you do.
