<p><em><strong> Answer this question:</strong></em> How are you different from your colleagues down the street that do the exact type of work that you do?</p>
<ul>
<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m bigger.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I&#8217;m smaller and more personal.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I have more experience.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I do better legal work.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I return phone calls; they don&#8217;t.&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;I charge less than they do.&#8221;</li>

<p>Great, but those are all differences for a commodity; a legal service. You haven&#8217;t yet told me how YOU are different. The way to show you&#8217;re different is with video.</p>
<p>Not one video. Not two or three. But with five, ten, fifteen and more videos. Not 15 or 30 second videos that have no useful content. But with real content that your potential consumer wants and needs. Not legal advice, but general topics of importance.</p>
<p>You want someone to be able to say &#8220;I went online to find an attorney, and the only lawyer I kept seeing was you. You&#8217;re all over the internet with your videos.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s dominating the online video world.</p>
<p>P.S. That&#8217;s exactly what one of my competitors said about me when they were doing some surveillance of who their competition was online.</p>

<p>Do These Videos Sound Familiar? They should. They were all done by the same video production company. But there&#8217;s even more similarity here.</p>
<ul>
<li>The title is the same for each.</li>
<li>The background is the same for each.</li>
<li>They&#8217;re even looking at the same place off-camera.</li>
<li>YouTube shows they each have less than 20 views per video, even though they were uploaded over seven months ago.</li>
</ul>
<p>But there&#8217;s a bigger problem here.</p>
<p>Each of the three attorneys are from <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">different</span></strong> law firms. They compete with each other in the same geographic area here in New York City.</p>
<p>Why is that a problem?</p>
<p>I&#8217;d be pretty mad if my video production company had competing attorneys talk about the same exact question in their videos.</p>
<p>You see, a video producer helps shape and control what the attorney is going to talk about. The producer provides suggestions to the attorney about what their viewers want to hear and learn about. A video producer that blatantly tells three competing attorneys to talk about the same exact topic and asks the same exact question would make me very upset; especially if he or she didn&#8217;t tell each of these attorneys that their competitors would be asked the same exact question.</p>
<p>So why is that a problem?</p>
<p>How do you differentiate the three attorneys from these three videos?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been in practice over 21 years in New York and have created hundreds of educational videos and I can&#8217;t differentiate them from these videos.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t fault the attorneys here. Rather, the fault lies with the video producer who obviously knew they&#8217;d be asking the same exact question to three different lawyers who compete with each other. The lawyers each paid good money to create their video. If this were me, I&#8217;d be rather upset.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the bottom line?</p>
<p>Make sure your video producer helps you create <span style="text-decoration: underline;">original</span> content. Make sure they&#8217;re not also creating the <em>same exact content</em> for your competitors. If they are, I suggest looking elsewhere for your video production needs.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Many of you know that in August I revamped this website by switching from Blogger over to WordPress. I transferred over all the content to my WordPress blog and have continued to add content on a regular basis. The other night I went back to the original site, which is still online under the URL of http://videoforlawyers.blogspot.com and was shocked.

When I had last been to my site, my Feedburner counter indicated that there were 1812 readers subscribed to my blog. What shocked me was that when I looked at the Feedburner count again, it had increased by over 100 readers even though I had not added any content on the old site since August. This was fascinating.

I transferred over all the content to my WordPress blog and have continued to add content on a regular basis. <p>I immediately realized that these people did not know that I switched my blog over to WordPress, and changed the URL to <a title="Lawyers Video Studio" href="http://lawyersvideostudio.com" target="_blank">http://lawyersvideostudio.com</a>. What I also needed to do was redirect people going to the old blog directly to the new one.</p>
<p>Importantly, I created a quick blog post on my old site letting my readers know that we had the new site up and running with tons of fresh new content. Importantly, I told my readers that if they really want content that I did not disclose to the public, then they have to sign up for my e-mail updates.</p>
<p>What does this have to do with creating video?</p>
<p>Nothing. Imagine that, coming from me. I&#8217;ve created a blog post in The Lawyer&#8217;s Video Studio having nothing directly to do with video. This is a shocker, to me anyway.</p>
<p>What does this have to do with attorneys who market themselves online?</p>
<p>Everything. If you are transferring your blog or website from one place to another, make sure that your readers from your old site know that you have a new website address, and make sure your URL is redirected seamlessly.</p>

"I'm a medical malpractice and personal injury trial lawyer," I said. "I'm not a marketer." A marketer is sleazy. A marketer is a businessman looking to make a sale. A marketer is someone who wants you to part with your hard earned money. At least that's what I thought up until that point. Then I realized that what I was trying to do was educate a viewer with my videos. It was at that moment that I recognized for the very first time that what I was doing was in fact MARKETING!

It was at that moment that I recognized for the very first time that what I was doing was <em>in fact </em><strong><em>MARKETING</em></strong>!</p>
<p>It took me a few months to come to grips that I <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>AM</strong></span> a marketer of my legal services. I may be a lawyer who helps injured victims obtain compensation, but in order for the world around me to know that I am here and available, I must be able to <strong>TELL THE WORLD</strong> what I do and how I&#8217;m different from all the other people who market themselves. That&#8217;s marketing.</p>
<p>Dan Kennedy, the well-known information marketer likes to say that we are all marketers of information, regardless of what business we&#8217;re in. As an attorney who uses video to market myself, I really had a tough time accepting that I am a marketer. Yet with each new video I created, I began to see how I was educating my viewers and marketing my services at the same time.</p>
<p>Now, I consider myself a marketing maven. I love to read about marketing and learn from smarter people who have &#8220;Been there and done it&#8221; marketers. If you&#8217;re an attorney, you can&#8217;t get any better than learning from fellow trial lawyer Ben Glass of Fairfax Virginia. Ben has transformed the way attorneys market themselves to the general public and empowered them to be different, be ethical, and live life big while carving out a family life for themselves. His marketing system, <a title="Great Legal Marketing" href="http://www.greatlegalmarketing.com/" target="_blank">Great Legal Marketing</a> is a genius breakthrough. If you haven&#8217;t been to one of his seminars, you shouldn&#8217;t walk there, you should run there.</p>
<p>I am proud to say that I&#8217;m a marketer of legal services. My videos are watched around the country and in many different parts of the world. I am proud that I receive calls from viewers thanking me for providing useful information that nobody else gives. I know video works. It helps show I&#8217;m different. It lets viewers get to know me and begin to trust me before I ever meet them in person.</p>
<p>The sooner you realize that you are a marketer, the sooner you can transform your good video into great video.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Today's video review is not about a lawyer video. Rather, it's about a guy who built a business creating newsletters for people to keep in touch with their customers and clients. Jim Palmer calls himself the "Newsletter Guru." He clearly "gets" why it's so crucial to keep in touch with your clients and customers on a regular frequent basis.

In this video we see Jim paddling his canoe on a lake near his home. He is wearing sunglasses, and the camera is sitting in the canoe pointed upwards. As Jim talks, you hear the oar making contact with the water. Jim tells a story about finding a painting he wanted to purchase and the business owner refusing to ship it to his home. The point of the video is to show that the business owner lost a key opportunity to make an easy sell by creating a roadblock.

<p>I like this video for a number of reasons. First, it&#8217;s different. Here&#8217;s a guy in the middle of a relaxing activity telling a story that is educational from a marketing standpoint. He&#8217;s paddling a canoe on a big open lake. There&#8217;s no hazard of him getting into an accident, like in a moving car, except for falling overboard and destroying his expensive camera.</p>
