<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">1. A ¾ page yellow pages ad or  a video channel with educational video?</span></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">My  question is &#8220;Why would you ever bother with the yellow pages anymore?&#8221;  Since it&#8217;s a money-losing proposition and most people don&#8217;t use the  yellow pages anymore, why would you throw away all of your marketing  dollars on a static ¾ page in a competitive market? A consumer searching  for an attorney will have to wade through 20 full page ads (in New  York) to find a personal injury attorney. Then they&#8217;ll get to the ¾ page  ads, then the ½ page ads and on and on.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Some  lawyers say that if they use the YP as an educational tool and direct  them to a website or phone number they stand a better chance of getting a  call from another source. Makes sense, right? Yes, but only if the  other 20 lawyers before you have rejected that person&#8217;s case. You get  the rejects that nobody wants.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">If that&#8217;s what you  want to spent your $20,000 on, then good luck to you. I personally think  it&#8217;s a mistake, but what do I know? You might prove me wrong. The only  person you should be worrying about is whether that $20,000 will produce  a great return on your investment; not just that one client will pay  for the ad- you want to generate a profit from the ad and have the ad  continue producing quality, pre-qualified clients for you. Do you really  think the yellow pages is the way to do that anymore?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>2.  TV ad or create online video?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">It&#8217;s  unlikely you&#8217;ll be able to create a series of TV ads and have them play  frequently for any significant time on TV for $20,000. Your &#8216;branding&#8217;  message with a TV ad is an expensive proposition. It&#8217;s unlikely someone  needing your services will be watching that particular show, at that  particular time slot on only a few days of the week. Unless you have a  huge marketing budget, TV ads will not generate the calls to your office  in the way that some other media can.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">My  advice? Skip the TV ad genre. They&#8217;re too similar and fail to explain  to a viewer why they should call any one particular attorney over  another.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>3. Radio ads or online  video?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">When was the  last time you called someone after listening to something on the radio?  I&#8217;ve never done it. I&#8217;m sure others have. Radio messages are transient  and fleeting. After those 15-30 seconds, your marketing dollars  disappear into the radio waves, never to return.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">How  many radio ads do you need to create to establish frequent broadcasting  to your audience? Many each day; each week and continue to do so. Will  it work? Sure it will- over time; using a catchy &#8216;1-800-I-SUE-FOR-YOU&#8217;  phone number. The key is knowing whether it will pay off and is a  worthwhile return on your investment.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Compare  that to online video. Create your video once and have it played 10  times, 100 times, 10,000 times or more, all for the same exact price  of&#8230;NOTHING!</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">What other  media allows you have your marketing message available to you any time  of day or night, exactly when someone wants to know the information that  you have to offer in your video? Nothing else compares.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>4.  Classified ads or online video?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">You&#8217;re  kidding right? You are still using classifieds to market your services?  You think you&#8217;ll attract quality paying clients using Craigslist with  the following type ad? &#8220;Injured? Call me. I can help.&#8221; Very original.  Very informative. Certainly stands out from all other attorney ads. I&#8217;m  being facetious in case you couldn&#8217;t tell.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Skip  the classifieds and start creating your attorney video.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>5.  Display ads or online video?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Some  attorneys love to use display ads. They offer seminars; they create  advertorials; they try to stand out using a display ad. That&#8217;s good  marketing. However, in order to get the best rate, you need to publish  your ad often and over a period of months. That will become cost  prohibitive. Also, unless you can track your calls from your ad, you&#8217;re  wasting your money.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">What  happens when that newspaper is finished and gets thrown in the garbage?  You see your marketing dollars going down the drain as well. It doesn&#8217;t  work for you while you sleep. It&#8217;s not found by someone searching for  your services; only if they were reading that newspaper and read up to  the point where your ad appears.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">When  you create informative online video, after your initial cost to create  and upload it, it works for you ALL the time and it costs you zero  dollars. There is nothing better anywhere.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>6.  Direct mail or online video?</strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">If  you&#8217;re a trial attorney like I am and handle personal injury and  medical malpractice cases, you can&#8217;t use direct mail for the general  public. You can&#8217;t send direct mail to patients in a hospital emergency  room or even in an orthopedist&#8217;s waiting room (but I bet a lot of  attorneys fantasize about being able to do that!). You can&#8217;t send direct  mail to people who don&#8217;t need your services at that time; that&#8217;s a  waste of money.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">If  you have a targeted list, then you can use direct mail to your  advantage and you should. However, without a list of potential clients  who will need your services, you have to have an alternative. CAVEAT:  THERE ARE MANY ETHICS RULES THAT PROHIBIT DIRECT SOLICITATION OF  POTENTIAL CLIENTS. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR LOCAL RULES ARE BEFORE  ENGAGING IN DIRECT MAIL.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">With  video, it&#8217;s online and available at all hours of the night or day. It  will show up when a viewer is actively looking for your specialty.  Optimize the chance that your video will be found and you stand a much  greater chance that your viewer will call you for information instead of  your competitor.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">My  advice: Get started creating online video today.</span></p>

<p>Excellent. Then why aren&#8217;t you creating video to market your law practice? If you are, why aren&#8217;t those viewers calling your office? What are they waiting for, a personal invitation? Are your viewers really expecting you to reach through the computer screen and physically pull them into your office? Get real.</p>
<p>Ok- let&#8217;s get serious here and dump the sarcasm. Do you know what it takes to create great video? Initiative. Guts. Drive. That&#8217;s it. The rest falls into place.</p>
<p>Anyone can hire a video company to produce great quality video. That&#8217;s the super-easy part. The hard part is learning what to talk about in your video; learning what your viewer wants to see and hear; learning to stop talking about yourself, and finally, learning how to tell the world about your new video.</p>
<p>I want you to read that paragraph again, because it&#8217;s so important.</p>
<p>You must remember that unless your video producer is also an experienced trial attorney, they may have no idea who your ideal client is. If you hire a wedding videographer to shoot your video, he or she may show up in your office and simply say, &#8220;Ok, start talking.&#8221; That won&#8217;t get you anywhere with your viewers.</p>
<p>In jury selection you want to let jurors talk. If you&#8217;re doing all the talking, you learn nothing about your jury. If you ask your jurors open-ended questions, it gives them an opportunity to talk and you will actually learn something about them. Why can&#8217;t you do the same for your videos?</p>
<p>Stop talking! (Figuratively). Instead, start giving your viewers information that THEY NEED to know. Don&#8217;t give them information you think they need to know about you, your wonderful credentials and your law firm: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been in business since the Ice Age&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Our collective wisdom is greater than the teachings of the Bible&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Our partners have all been on law review and clerked for the Wise men of&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what a viewer says to all that: &#8220;Yeah, so? How will that help solve MY legal problem?&#8221;</p>

I was even more curious because it had my name and website listed under the headline. I knew that I didn't write a blog post with that name or a video with that title. I was intrigued.

The website URL was the New York Times online blog. I clicked on the link which took me to the New York Times online site. The blog post was all about black ice and how dangerous it is in New York City. Further into the article the writer mentioned a video I made titled "Slip and fall on snow and ice-who is at fault?" and some of the comments I made in my video.

<p>It was a great pick-up and mention of my video in this blog post. In the discussion following the post, there were clear differences of opinion about who would be responsible for black ice. I was also pleased to see that the writer had mentioned that this is only <em>one</em> of <em>many</em> videos I had created.</p>
<h3><em><span style="color: #0000ff;">THE BACK STORY</span></em></h3>
<p>Here&#8217;s the back story on that video. A few years ago I wrote an article and posted online and also my website. It was a lengthy detailed article explaining what a consumer needed to know if they slipped and fell on snow and ice. The article came about because of the case I handled involving a woman who slipped in a parking lot on black ice. When I got into video a few years ago, I realized this would be a perfect topic for viewers to learn about so they could understand how an attorney proves a slip and fall case on snow and ice in New York. Most people are unfamiliar with notice requirements. Rather, they often come into the office thinking that simply because they fell and got hurt that automatically means they have a valid case. Anyone who practices personal injury law knows that&#8217;s simply not the case. Proving notice is essential, whether it is constructive or actual notice.</p>

<p>In any event, the writer of this blog post J. David Goldman was writing about Black ice in New York City and must have found my video by doing a Google search on the topic of slip and falls and black ice.</p>
<p>For those attorneys who think that video doesn&#8217;t work, they are dead wrong. Video establishes you as the &#8220;go-to&#8221; expert; establishes your credibility and builds trust with your viewer. I have been contacted many times by news reporters based upon informative videos I&#8217;ve created. It&#8217;s a really cool feeling when a news reporter calls you and says &#8220;I was watching your video online and I would like to ask you more questions for a news piece I&#8217;m working on.&#8221;</p>
<p>In fact, just today I received a phone call from a woman who found my videos online and called to ask me for more information. She was so appreciative of the information I had in my videos that she told me she watched at least 10 of them before calling me. <em>Importantly</em>, she said every time she did a search online, my videos kept coming up in her search results. That&#8217;s the purpose of creating educational and informative videos, so that you&#8217;re not only the logical choice for viewer to call, but the <em><strong>only</strong></em> choice.</p>

<p>It wasn&#8217;t that long ago that I considered myself a trial attorney focused solely on handling my client&#8217;s cases.</p>
<p>As I learned how important it was to get new business, there was always the requisite get-to-know other lawyer meetings in order to expand my referral base. I also tried all the traditional forms of advertising including Yellow Pages, TV commercials, display ads, classified ads, 1-800 number campaigns, free recorded messages and on and on.</p>
<p>The Lawyers&#8217; Video Studio came from years of experience (and failures) with traditional forms of attorney marketing. I soon learned that the best way to learn to do something is to learn from people who have &#8220;been there and done that.&#8221;</p>
<p>My goal in creating the Lawyers&#8217; Video Studio was to create a great resource for lawyers to learn about creating attorney video, and also allow other attorneys the ability to hire me to get them onto video to improve their marketing for their legal practice. There are many good video companies out there, but there are no video producers who are also experienced trial lawyers who have created hundreds of educational videos to help market their own legal practice.</p>
<p>Those other video production companies may know how to create a crystal-clear video, but if your video never gets watched you&#8217;ve wasted your money. Almost anyone nowadays can create crystal-clear high-definition video. Doing that is almost a simple as setting up your video camera on a tripod and pressing &#8220;record.&#8221; The key is knowing what content to putting your video, and importantly what <span style="text-decoration: underline;">not</span> to put in your video. Since most video producers are not trial attorneys, they may find it difficult to explain to you who your ideal viewer is online. Without knowing that information, it is impossible for a video producer to help you create great video.</p>
<p>An experienced trial attorney in practice for over 21 years, who is also a savvy internet marketer, knows what viewers want in an attorney video. Learn from my experience about what works, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">and importantly</span>, what doesn&#8217;t.</p>

<p>Lawyers who use pay-per-click are literally paying rent to be on the right-side of Google search results, or at the top of the page with the yellow background. Many of these firms are nowhere to be found in the organic search results. What does that mean? If you stop paying rent, nobody will find your website.</p>
<p>The same is now true for your videos.</p>
<p>YouTube has created a program that allows you to appear at the top and on the right side of the search results in a YouTube search, for a fee, of course. Pay-per-click for video. Guess what? Stop paying rent and try to find your video. If you can&#8217;t, your videos will not be watched.</p>
<p>More importantly, you need to ask why your videos are not being indexed and ranking highly in YouTube&#8217;s <strong><em>organic</em> </strong>search results. If you&#8217;re not coming up in the organic search results, you have a big problem. You need help. I have the solution.</p>

<p>5. DO NOT USE YOUR CAMERA’S BUILT-IN MICROPHONE</p>
<p>Using the built-in-microphone to create your lawyer video is the kiss-of-death for your video. The sound will be terrible and viewers will focus on the poor quality of your video rather than your content.</p>
