The point was hammered home in a recent blog post from my good friend Dave Lorenzo, a legal marketing expert. He discussed how crucial it is to establish a relationship when building your law firm. He emphasized that there is no magic silver bullet. Rather, the process begins with a simple relationship that focuses on the client, their problems and the solutions you can offer. Without relationship, there is no trust. Without trust, client becomes dissatisfied.

It’s true. I finally confessed. I used to love going to live CLE seminars about trial practice, direct examination, cross examination, jury selection, opening arguments, summations and legal updates. I loved learning everything possible from attorneys who were in the trenches every day trying cases.
While trying to learn how to become a marketing student and expand my marketing horizons, I noticed that none of the bar associations we’re giving any seminars about legal marketing. I began to call different bar associations asking if there were any classes or seminars on legal marketing. The answers were all disturbingly familiar. “We don’t feel that lawyers need to take classes or CLE seminars about marketing.” “Marketing seminars are beneath us and we simply don’t have time in our schedule.”

Lawyers are trying all sorts of things to get themselves noticed. Many established law firms with older partners have been reluctant to utilize new technology to market themselves in today’s brutal economic climate.
I spoke to an attorney the other day who was very excited to tell me that his firm had just created a logo and now all of their business cards would have their logo on it. I was tempted to ask the attorney whether any clients failed to hire them in the past because they did not have a logo.
