I’m Heading to St. Maarten to Shoot Video with Gerry Oginski!

Where I’m staying while watching Gerry shoot video on location

I’m on a plane right now flying at 36,000 feet on JetBlue. I’m heading to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Maarten where I’m going to be shooting video with Gerry Oginski. Actually, that’s not accurate. I’m not going to be shooting video with him. I’m going to be observing him shoot his own videos. There’s a big difference.

You might ask yourself why we’d be heading to the Caribbean to shoot video.

As Gerry describes it, “Why not?”

The reality is that Gerry’s going on vacation with his entire family. A large family no doubt. All four of his kids, his wife and his mother-in-law. Oh yes, his daughter’s boyfriend too!

In case you don’t know, St. Maarten is part of the Netherland Antilles and has a huge tourist population. It’s a highly popular destination because of its famed beaches, shopping and food.

Anyway, I had the opportunity to talk with Gerry on the plane and my conversation was eye-opening.

“Explain to me why you would ever want to shoot video while on vacation? Don’t you have enough to do with your family?”

That generated a hearty laugh. He answered my question with a question. “How many lawyers do you know go on vacation and take all their video equipment with them?”

“None,” I replied.

“How many lawyers create educational video in exotic locations and destinations?” Gerry asked.

“None that I know,” I answered.

“Think about how that makes me different,” Gerry said cryptically.

“I would think that on vacation you’d want to chill out on the beach and go to the pool,” I said.

“Of course I will do that. But when there’s some down time, it’s a great opportunity to use that productively. I might write a blog post. I might write an article. I might get my video equipment out and shoot an hour of video.”

“If you shoot an hour of video, how many video clips can you create out of that?”

“Probably between 5-6 separate videos.”

“Do you script out what you’re going to say?” I inquire.

“Never. I only use an outline.”

“Why don’t you use a script?”

“Simple. When a new client walks into the office and asks me a question, could you imagine what would happen if I held up my hand and said ‘Just a moment…I have to run to my file cabinet and read you my canned answer…”

“When you’re in St. Maarten, where do you shoot your videos?”

“Everywhere. At the resort where we have a timeshare. In town. At the beach. Anywhere I find it to be quiet and a good location from an aesthetic standpoint.”

“Aren’t you worried that people who watch your video will think it’s odd that an attorney is shooting video by the beach or in the middle of a tourist town?”

“Worried? No. In fact, many times I will tell my viewer where I am and why I’m shooting video here and now. I created a video sitting on the beach watching the seagulls fly by. I talked about the seagulls and how they kept interrupting what I was trying to say. My viewers loved it.”

Well that wraps us today’s post about my conversation with Gerry as we head down to St. Maarten today. Join me in a few days when my next post comes out as we continue this conversation.

Gerry Oginski is the master of online video. If you have not seen his videos, you should. He’s done more videos than any lawyer out there. The big edge that Gerry has over his competition is that his videos allow consumers to get to ‘know’ him before they even pick up the phone. His use of video on his website and his video blog is amazing.
