<p>Just today I received another call from a woman whose mother was diagnosed with septic shock and died shortly after. This woman was doing a Google search to learn what septic shock was. This is what she said to me:</p>
<p>&#8220;I did a search about sepsis, and you came up on top of hundreds of other lawyers.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Did you see my video that talks about sepsis?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Yes I did. That&#8217;s why I decided to call you.&#8221;</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the point? You need to create a video that answers your viewers <em><strong>unasked</strong></em> question. How do you know what they need to know? Simple. The next time a potential client comes in your door, write down every single question they ask you. Then do it again for the next 10 people who come into your office. Those are the frequently asked questions that will form the basis for your <em><strong>series </strong></em>of videos that you will ask me to create and produce. Notice the subtle plug for my video production services here?</p>
<p>Remember, I do not want to see copycat videos that ask &#8220;What is Sepsis?&#8221; Rather, I want to see original, innovative content that answers viewers <strong><em>unasked</em></strong> questions.</p>

<p>I saw a great marketing tool today in action while on vacation in Florida.</p>
<p>My six-year-old son jumped into the pool and a moment later, came up for air excitedly telling me that &#8220;Daddy, there&#8217;s a scuba diver in the pool!&#8221; He eagerly went into the deep end and watched the scuba diver in 11 feet of water. A few minutes later of treading water, my son popped his head up above water and exlaimed &#8220;Dad, the diver is playing with me!&#8221;</p>
<p>A few minutes later the scuba diver came over to the shallow end of the pool, and asked my son if he wanted to see something cool.  Of course, you know the answer. What did he show him? Out of all the scuba gear he had by the side of the pool, he reached in and pulled out a pair of swim fins- just the right size for my son. The smile on my son&#8217;s face was a mile wide. Then he reached into another bag of goodies and pulled out a face mask. You could see my son waiting with anticipation while the diver put a kid-sized mask over his head and adjust it properly. After he got used to the face mask, my son asked where the oxygen tank was and if he could use it.</p>
<p>When the scuba guy pulled out the air regulator which was attached to his oxygen tank, you could see the excitement in my son&#8217;s face and body language. He listened carefully as the diver explained how to put it into his mouth and breathe normally. After 30 seconds with the air regulator in his mouth, and his head above water, without being told to go under water, my son jumped the gun and began following the scuba diver&#8217;s feet. It was fascinating to watch.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t realize what was going on from a marketing standpoint until about 15 minutes later, when the scuba guy told me about how he&#8217;ll be here all week giving scuba lessons each morning. When I returned to the pool a few hours later, the scuba guy was still in the pool giving demonstrations to eager young kids. Once they were hooked, the scuba diver knew that the happy parents would eagerly fork over money for scuba lessons for the entire week. He knew it so well that he told me that each of these kids would be talking about scuba diving for the entire week. He wasn&#8217;t wrong. </p>
<p>My son hasn&#8217;t stopped talking about his exciting morning in the pool. (Luckily for me, he&#8217;s a little too young for lessons, but the scuba guy happily told my son that he&#8217;d work with him each morning and let him scuba dive with him).</p>
<p>This scuba diver knew that by giving away his services for free for a few hours in the pool today, he would be guaranteed to get paid for his scuba lessons for an entire week- all without any advertising at all. What an amazing concept.</p>
<p>As an attorney, you might want to consider this approach if you offer clients services for a fixed cost, like a simple will. How could you do it? Offer a simple will for free, and then explain why they&#8217;ll need a trust and an estate plan that you can charge for. Give it away for free, and your clients will eagerly pay you for your other services.</p>

<p>As an attorney, you might want to consider this approach if you offer clients services for a fixed cost, like a simple will. How could you do it? Offer a simple will for free, and then explain why they&#8217;ll need a trust and an estate plan that you can charge for. Give it away for free, and your clients will eagerly pay you for your other services.</p>

<p>You may recognize the judge&#8217;s chair, the witness chair, and the jury box. It&#8217;s almost as if a viewer has never watched any TV &#8230; in their life. Seriously. I hope Roberts is not really like this in front of a jury.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my question: If a potential client is looking for a trial attorney online, is a tour in and around the courtroom going to convince them to pick up the phone and call you? Don&#8217;t you think the viewer expects that you know where everyone is positioned in the courtroom?</p>

<p><strong>1. Viewers get to see you.</strong></p>
<p>Think about why you watch TV. You like to see action. You like to observe. While articles are always good, they simply do not have the same effect as a personal video that a viewer can watch to decide for themself whether you are the attorney they should call.</p>
<p>An educational video will distinguish you from all of your competitors. Guaranteed.</p>
<p><strong>2. Viewers get to hear you.</strong></p>
<p>A potential client that sees you and hears you starts to become familiar with you. It&#8217;s the same reaction people get when they see a celebrity or TV personality when walking down the street. They feel as if they already know them. They&#8217;ve watched them on TV. They&#8217;ve &#8220;seen&#8221; them while in their homes and bedrooms watching TV. Now when they see that individual in person, they think they already know them.</p>
<p>Familiarity breeds trust. With your educational video tips that&#8217;s exactly what you strive for. A website viewer who is already familiar with you; your style; your mannerisms, will, all other things being equal, want to call you instead of a faceless law firm.</p>
<p><strong>3. Viewers get to see how confident you are.</strong></p>
<p>There are some things text cannot convey. Portraying confidence is one of them. Unless you have client testimonials describing in detail how confident you are, there is simply no better way for a viewer to see your expertise in action- short of coming into your office for an appointment.</p>
<p><strong>4. Viewers learn about how you can help them.</strong></p>
<p>Keep in mind that a website viewers want to learn how you can help them. They really do not want to know how great you think you are. So&#8230;give the viewer what he wants! An educational video that teaches the process of how lawsuits work. Nobody teaches them this information. Guess what? It&#8217;s not a secret. However, most lawyers want the potential client in their office first, and then tell them all the &#8220;secrets&#8221; of how lawsuits work.</p>
<p>The common thinking is that is the way to get the client to sign up with you, by showing how knowledgeable and experienced you are. OK- that&#8217;s fair. However, the online viewer looking for a lawyer will go elsewhere if you cannot distinguish yourself from your competition.</p>
<p><strong>5. Video is much more compelling than text.</strong></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the problem: Everyone has basically the same credentials. The practicing lawyers all went to law school. They all passed the bar exam. They all passed the character and fitness committee in New York. Every law firm has a website. Every firm has photos on it. So how are you different?</p>
<p><strong>The answer is video.</strong></p>

<p>This is an all-around excellent video from the Law Offices of Fern Trevino. Informative. Helpful. Educational. Precise. And did I say educational?</p>
<p>Fern Trevino knocks it out of the ballpark with this video discussing what you should and should not do if you think you might be fired. The graphics that are interspersed in the video are well done and pose questions that Trevino answers. Her general advice is confidence-inspiring. I did, however, deduct half a point for reasons discussed below.</p>

<p>This video by The Dolan Law Firm immediately commands your attention because the client makes no bones that she does not like lawyers. This unexpected statement makes for an unusually refreshing client testimonial. Her attitude changes once she starts describing how Chris Dolan, her San Francisco-based accident lawyer, was able to help her in a car v. motorcycle case. She looks at the camera straight-on, and even goes so far to say that she never imagined that she would ever become friends with a lawyer.</p>
<p>So far so good. As a potential client searching for an attorney online, I would then expect to see her attorney on camera, either in a split screen or immediately following her comments to discuss the challenges and outcome of her case. Such an appearances would bolster his credibility.</p>
<p>But Chris Dolan does not appear in the video — a head scratcher.</p>
<p>In that same department, why does a law firm that spends so much time and effort to produce a quality testimonial allow the videographer to advertise itself extensively before the video starts and after the video finishes? Giving free advertising to the videographer distracts the viewer from your message. Tell the videographer to take a hike. If the videographer offers you a discount, list its Web address in the sidebar text, not in the video.</p>

<p>You should watch this video by Greenberg &#038; Rudman to see exactly what you should not do as an attorney trying to market yourself using online video. This &#8220;video&#8221; consists of nothing more than a photo of an advertisement for the firm.</p>
<p>The three photos in the ad show damaged and destroyed cars, which as a potential client looking for an attorney online, would not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.</p>
<p>There is no voice, no people. Nothing. In my book, this &#8220;video&#8221; gets a big fat zero. I cannot imagine any potential client choosing to call this law firm based on this &#8220;video.&#8221;</p>

<p>TechnoScore: 1.0<br />1 = Lowest Possible Score; 5 = Highest Possible Score<br />If you want a laugh and nostalgic memories of watching Batman and Robin when you were in grade school, then give this video by The Law Office of Jeffrey D. Rowe  a brief, very brief, moment of your time.</p>
<p>The video consists of a series of photo slides that are supposed to persuade you to call the firm if you are arrested for DUI in Fresno. The &#8220;video&#8221; starts off with music that sounds like it was a spoof for a lawyer commercial. Goofy. In my mind I&#8217;m thinking &#8220;Pow,&#8221; &#8220;Kablam!&#8221; &#8220;Boom,&#8221; and &#8220;I can&#8217;t believe this is a lawyer video.&#8221;</p>
<p>Twenty seconds into the picture montage, there&#8217;s a picture of someone jumping in the air, with the sub-heading &#8220;For the best outcome.&#8221; While the picture is shown, you&#8217;ve got this Batman theme music running the length of this &#8220;video.&#8221; Even more ridiculous is that the video length is 55 seconds, but at 28 seconds, the montage ends and you are left with a still screen saying &#8220;Call Us NOW!&#8221; for the next 27 seconds. Bizarre.</p>
<p>There is no reason for anyone to &#8220;Call Us NOW&#8221; based on this photo montage. The attorney fails to give the viewer any information that explains why he should be called instead of the many other DUI lawyers in Fresno.</p>
<p>What was he thinking? Maybe the sales pitch was so good it was given as a freebie. Skip the freebie and create a video that will actually persuade a potential client to call you.</p>
