In my opinion, online video is the only way to distinguish yourself from all of your competitors. A video tells a viewer who you are; what you are; how you speak; how confident you are; what you look like; what you sound like, and whether you know enough to convince a potential client to call and ask you questions.

Ask any website company what they think of online videos for lawyers and I guarantee they will tell you that it is the hottest tool to connect viewers with you. Website companies are now scrambling to get lawyers onto video. Why? Because it is the best way to distinguish yourself from every other lawyer.

Why else? These website companies see big money in creating video for lawyers. But there’s a big catch that you need to know about before getting sucked into that cycle that the yellow pages reps use to generate nice commissions. “Just do one video…that’s all you need. Really. It’s not that expensive. People will love you…”

Well, here we go again…it’s the same merry-go-round with the company reps. The next year, they’ll call and tell you that… Continue reading

This brings me back to the the yellow pages rep and the ‘in-house’ design team creating all the same ads. Sure your website has a nicer template. Sure you have beautiful colors, and of course you have scenic photos and vistas of cityscapes. Many websites still do not have photos of the lawyers in their firm. Of those sites that have photos of their lawyers, the inevitable “So what?” comes to my mind. Other than showing that you know how to smile or stand in front of a fancy bookcase, what does that photo do to differentiate you from anyone else?

Do you think a photo of you standing in front of a bookcase with your arms folded over your chest and a mean-looking scowl will encourage a viewer to call you instead of the next lawyer who is sitting at a desk with a law book looking studious? The answer is no. Having a photo of yourself is better than no photo, but with most attorneys putting their photos on their website, it now becomes pretty meaningless.

Let’s also assume for the moment that every lawyer lists their biography… Continue reading

YouLaw: Leonard Weitzman Talks About Himself Without Talking About Himself
By Gerry Oginski | Tuesday, December 2, 2008

In the first half of this video, Law Office of Leonard Weitzman, Family Law, Bridgewater, NJ, I was impressed with how confident, natural, and poised Weitzman was during his one man show. Yet, when he started talking about himself during the second half, I struggled not to jump to the next video.

Weitzman uses a very effective and subtle technique when talking about what you should look for when deciding on an attorney. Specifically, he mentions the need to see and hear a confident, able and presentable lawyer. He gives you this information while sounding confident, able, and totally presentable.

Educational online video is the best tool lawyers can use to generate calls to their office.

1. Viewers get to see you.

Think about why you watch TV. You like to see action. You like to observe. While articles are always good, they simply do not have the same effect as a personal video that a viewer can watch to decide for themself whether you are the attorney they should call.

An educational video will distinguish you from all of your competitors. Guaranteed.

2. Viewers get to hear you.

A potential client that sees you and hears you starts to become familiar with you. It’s the same reaction people get when they see a celebrity or TV personality when walking down the street. They feel as if they already know them. They’ve watched them on TV. They’ve “seen” them while in their homes and bedrooms watching TV. Now when they see that individual in person, they think they already know them.

Familiarity breeds trust. With your educational video tips that’s exactly what you strive for. A website viewer who is already familiar with you; your style; your mannerisms, will, all other things being equal, want to call you instead of… Continue reading
